One thing Guatemala kicks ass at is in the highly profitable and succesful distribution of bootleg copies of music and movies. The government looks the other way (unless you count a raid once a year), and there are tons of streets were people make their living by providing the public all the ilegal stuff they little hearts desire. Me, I drove downtown today, where Zone 1 is at, the Mecca of bootleg vendors. For a mere Q30 (roughly US$4) I got me copies of The Ages of Lulu, Irreversible, Last Tango in Paris and Be Kind Rewind. The first three provide an equal combination of bold/disturbing sexual content, while the last one is pure genius (finished watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind last night… for the gazillionth time, I’m a big Michel Gondry fan). Lacy Weekend, here I come!

  1. ‘La sexta’ for the win!

  2. Oh yeah, I remember seeing copies of stuff everywhere. I don’t think I ever bought anything though – wait, not true. I got a copy of a CD by Juanes. That was it though.

  3. Javier: yeah, man, lot of good stuff out there!

Nandango: What album did u get? Juanes can be lots of fun, although it can tire you after an hour or two. You should check out “Mi Libre Canción” the duet he sings with Laura Pausini. One of his best vocal performances, and a beautiful song.

  4. Un Dia Normal was the one I got. I think that was his latest when I was there because they were playing Es Por Ti everywhere when I first got there and Fotografia when I left. My brother lived in Mexico for two years and when he came home he had a more recent CD than what I had (I think). It had La Camisa Negra on it. Maybe it was a collaboration from multiple CDs. Anyway, I really like his music. The songs sound so strange because each one is totally different from another. It’s almost as though his style of music is to have no style. I’ll have to look into Mi Libre Cancion.

  5. Yep, La Camisa Negra was on his next album, Mi Sangre. He released this year La Vida es un Ratico, but I’m not into his stuff lately. I have a mix CD (bootleg of course) of his first 3 albums, which is pretty rocking. He started off with a band called Ekhymosis. I loved their song La Decisión, pure melancholy. I bet you’ll love Mi Libre Canción.
