The title of this post belongs to one of my most recent and weird search referrals: “not in my ass”.The picture below was controversial, and pulled from various international markets. Part of a Dolce&Gabanna ad, “the advertisement showing a woman pinned to the ground by the wrists by a bare-chested man, with other men in the background looking on”, has been banned since March 6, the Advertising Self-Discipline Institute (IAP) said. The ad “offended the dignity of the woman, in the sense that the feminine figure is shown in a degrading manner. The woman has an alienated expression, with an absent look”.

When the ad was pulled in Spain in February, D and G labelled the country “a bit backward” for the objections raised by the government and a consumer association.” As part of a novel I’m starting to write this week, I intend to depict a gang-rape, something a relative of a dear friend of mine went through. I do believe in pushing boundaries, but the intent of this approach makes or breaks our statement. Any thoughts on this subject?

  1. I think it would be more interesting and perhaps less controversial if she were the one doing the pinning.

  2. I’m sure of that: turning the sexual dominance role all the way around, huh.

  3. The only thing wrong with ad is how “oiled-up” everyone is..seriously, the “sheen” is a bit excessive…yuck.

  4. Could Charlie “Sheen” have been involved? It makes me wonder.

  5. Rape is a tough one to approach. While I think opposing to this ad is ridiculous, I have a lot of friends and family members who have been raped, so it’s something I try not to joke too much about. I think that anyone who has gone through it and has a right to be offended will be able to tell the intent behind how you approach the topic. As long as you aren’t glorifying rape and sexual violence, I think it still may shock people, but it is your right to do it, (at least in America, I’m not familiar with Guatemalan laws) and has a healing effect rather than a negative one when done properly.

  6. Last weekend I watched, for the third time I think, “Irreversible”. It has a 9 minute rape scene, filmed in only one shot (the director claims he chose this long shot in order to not have people thinking he’s glorifying rape), and whoever watches that movie can only be more sensitive to rape as one of the most disturbing crimes possible. I’m sorry to hear about people you care about being raped, that is always a tragedy. Thanks for dropping by!

  7. It does suck that rape happens so much, but that’s just the world we live in. Most everyone finds a way to deal with it, and they become stronger people through their suffering. Cancer happens too and nobody bitches when they make movies about that, so I say just do whatever you want as a creator, and tell any conservative nay-sayers to kiss your ass and go watch Passion of the Christ if they want to see some really graphic suffering. That usually shuts them up.

  8. Yeah, that Passion of the Christ is one of the ways to expose people’s double standard’s when it comes to film violence. Will drop by on your blog soon!
